Spices are aromatic substances of vegetable origin, coming mainly from Exotics countries. The word "spice" comes from the Latin "species" that indicates special and worth goods, which differ from ordinary ones. In fact they have been the main reason why the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama opened the sea route to India, and also one of the reasons that led Columbus to seek a quick and safe route to the Indies. Medieval medical science  attributed to spices an important role in the digestion process: people thought that the "heat" generated by the spices help the "cooking" of food in the stomach favoring a more rapid and effective assimilation.
